Endorsement - 03.03.2010

Willie Vaden:

This is a great nation. You can be born on an indian reservation to a family of modest means and still have the opportunity to become anything you want to be: a business owner; a mayor; a United States Congressional candidate.

Last night, the road to one of those aspirations was detoured. The people of District 27 have spoken with their ballots and have selected two worthwhile candidates, and I am not one of them.

I must thank all the people who helped me get this far in my journey. People who sacrificed time and donated money and believed in my candidacy. Thank you for your support and your vote. You are the strength of this nation! Your passion and commitment should never wane. That is why I'm asking you to support James Duerr. I believe James Duerr is an honorable man who will work hard for the people of District 27. His experience working as an elected official and proven record of fiscal conservatism make him the best candidate to face Solomon Ortiz in November.

Again, thank you to all my family and friends who worked hard on my campaign. I promise you I will not disappear. I will be around holding people accountable and asking the hard questions of our elected officials.

God bless America and District 27.

FIGHTING FOR THE TAXPAYERS
Special Called Appraisal District Meeting at 4:30pm Today

James Duerr was appointed to the Nueces County Appraisal District for a two year term from 2007 to 2009. During that time, Mr. Duerr made a motion to give back over $2,800,000 in excess funds back to the taxing entities. Mr. Duerr stated:
“This is the people’s money and should be given back to the people to prevent jobs losses in our community. The Board of the Nueces County Appraisal District should not be using these funds to purchase a new building. The existing
Appraisal District Building is more than adequate and has an entire empty floor for future growth.”

Impact on Downtown

The Nueces County Appraisal District is located in Downtown Corpus Christi. Downtown has been struggling for years with low office occupancy and vacant buildings. In response to this fact, Mr. Duerr said, “The Board has been looking at
relocating out of the Downtown. This is exactly the opposite of what City Leaders want. Recent initiatives such as the creation of a City Downtown Tax Increment Reinvestment would be negatively impacted by moving the Appraisal District out of Downtown.”

Special Called Meeting of the Nueces County Appraisal District - Today

Mr. Duerr will attend the board meeting today and give public comments to immediately give the $2.8 million back to the Taxing Entities of Nueces County.

Fiscal Responsible Leadership

Mr. Duerr believes in limited government and fiscal responsibility. As a Candidate for United States Representative District 27, Mr. Duerr will fight for lower taxes
and wise use of tax payer’s money. He stated: “We need to run government as a business, in the case of the Nueces County Appraisal District, the Board should be looking at upkeep and maintenance of its current building and not build a new $7.4 Million building at a time when the Taxing Entities need the money and Downtown needs to keep buildings occupied.

Public Comments to Nueces County Appraisal District - 02.03.2010

Download (Printable version)

Below is a copy of the Public Comments given by James Duerr at the Nueces County Appraisal District on February 3, 2010.

**********************************

Hello my name is James Duerr – 411 Pasadena Corpus Christi Texas

I was a Board Member of the Nueces County Appraisal District from 2007 to 2009. I appreciated the opportunity to serve the public in this capacity and I enjoyed working with my fellow Board Members.

However, the Board has come to a point where they must gain the public trust and I recommend that you immediately return the $2.8 million in the building fund back to the taxing entities. If the Appraisal District has a future need for repairs, they can use the $1 million line of credit and stop keeping the taxpayers money.

I have always been against the building of a new building because of the down turn in the economy where every cent in the budget may mean a job saved for the City, County, School District, Hospital district and many other local entities. The current building does need upkeep and maintenance but this can be done for far less than the $7.4 million required to build a new building.

Second, building a new building and moving out of Downtown is against the wishes of the Leaders of Corpus Christi whom are trying desperately to reinvigorate the Downtown business district. Moving the Appraisal District out of Downtown will hurt efforts to bring Downtown back to life.

I also have two simple solutions that will provide more transparency for the Nueces County Appraisal District and prevent this type of miscommunication in the future. We must all work together and these two recommendations will help.

1. Hold meetings at 5pm so that the public and the taxing entities can attend
2. Video Tape all meetings.

Again I would like to stress that the building fund should be immediately refunded to the taxing entities to stop needless waste of taxpayer’s money in fighting the return of the money back to the public.

Do not forget that the money in your building fund is the People’s Money not the Appraisal Districts money.

The people have spoken for the immediate return of all $2.8 million in the building fund. Please respect the wishes of the public and the taxing entities.

The money does not belong to the Appraisal District. The money belongs to the PEOPLE!

Note: The Nueces County Appraisal District Board did vote and authorize an immediate $1.5 million refund to the Taxing. I will stay on this issue to make sure that ALL the $2.8 million is refunded to the taxpayers in short order.

The Real Townhall was a Success!

Texas GOP Vote Features James Mathew Duerr

By: Donna McClure

U.S. Representative candidate James Matthew Duerr held the Real Townhall event in Corpus Christi Wednesday evening for citizens to learn about the proposed healthcare bill. Having not conducted a single live town hall meeting, Congressman Solomon Ortiz is not fulfilling his duty to his constituents. Therefore, Republican James Matthew Duerr got a team of medical experts together and held a meeting for the people to come learn and ask questions about health care reform.

The Real Townhall event was a success! There was some very productive discussion and lively interaction with people both for and against government run health care. Unfortunately for the constituents of District 27, our elected representative, Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz, Sr. refused to attend the event in person. Representative Ortiz's phone event was a huge disappointment due to technical issues. Even the protesters at the event were unhappy to be treated with such disrespect by the congressman.
James Duerr being Interviewed

James Matthew Duerr did a great thing for the community in hosting this event. I hope it will lead to more similar opportunities for South Texans to learn about important issues and participate in discussions that matter to real people.

Many people commented favorably about the lack of politicization during the event and commended James Matthew Duerr for being willing to listen and interact face to face with everyone, even those that disagree with him. This is a fine example of how our elected leaders should behave!

Also, thanks to Texas GOP Vote for providing the Where is Ortiz? stickers for the event. They were a hit with the over 300 participants of the Real Townhall as can been seen in the pictures of the event!
